marriage preparation

In a marriage, you are planning to bring together two families, two sets of values, two approaches to home life. There may be no more significant life transition than that experienced in entering into the marriage covenant. Complete understanding of this commitment, including God’s design for marriage, as well as a foundational understanding of one another, is essential preparation for this lifelong commitment. This is why we see it as a necessity that you experience marriage preparation training/counselling prior to being married by a pastor from The Meeting House.

The Meeting House provides a marriage preparation program. Alternatively, your Lead Pastor can advise you of approved preparation programs or counselling available in your community.

Our approach to pre-marital counseling here at The Meeting House is to offer Marriage Prep Workshops a few times a year. This consists of a Friday evening, all day Saturday workshop with a registered psychotherapist and registered marriage and family therapist, Herman Chow, who is also an adjunct professor at Tyndale University College and Seminary and University of Guelph. The program offered by The Meeting House includes understanding God’s design for marriage, family background awareness, communication and conflict resolution, goals and roles, sexuality and finances.

Ideally this training should occur well in advance of the wedding day so that it is truly a reflective experience, even allowing for the possibility of God showing a couple that they are not ready for marriage to one another. In fact, we highly recommend pre-engagement counseling.

Where there has been a previous marriage or where there are children of either person involved, extra time will be spent with a couple in understanding the impact of these issues.

The officiating pastor will also meet with you to get to know you, hear your story and ensure that he or she is able to meaningfully share in your wedding.

The workshop goes from 6:45 to 10:00 pm on Friday, and 9:30 am to 5:00 pm on Saturday. Light snacks and refreshments are provided both Friday and Saturday (lunch on Saturday is not provided). The cost per couple is $150 and is payable by credit card.

Additionally, some of our sites have trained Marriage Mentors to support the ongoing development of healthy marriages. This program is follow-up interactive mentoring sessions with a mentoring couple. If interested, please contact your Lead Pastor to find out what is available to you.

Note: Cancellation deadline is 7 business days before a workshop for a full refund. 50% refund is available after cancellation deadline and no less than 48 hours before workshop.
