AIDS CARE 2016 Update

February is one of our favourite months at The Meeting House. It’s when our community rallies together as a family during our annual AIDS CARE campaign. With just under two weeks left of AIDS CARE 2016, we want to highlight some of the amazing ways our Meeting House community is supporting the work of our partner Mennonite Central Committee in Southern Africa. Each year, we’re encouraged by how our church body expresses compassion uniquely within their own community. Here are a few phenomenal local AIDS CARE initiatives we’ve heard about.

Coffee Roast
Our entrepreneurial friends in Richmond Hill have partnered with Covernotes, a local coffee house, to create a specific  “AIDS CARE Roast” which is being sold at the site on Sunday mornings. Even cooler is that their local partner has been able to source beans from Malawi, home to some of the projects our church supports! The hope is this special coffee roast can be available for sale year-round to support AIDS CARE.

Movie Screening
A few home churches from the Oakville site are hosting a screening of Zoolander 2 at Film.Ca Cinemas for Thursday February 25 at 7pm.  It’s $15 per ticket with proceeds going to AIDS CARE.  If you’re in the area, bring your friends and join in on the fun while supporting a great cause!

Clothing Exchange
Also in Oakville, you’ll find an initiative combining fashion with fundraising as a few members have organized an event which raises money for AIDS CARE while promoting our value to live simplicity. As a bonus, all leftover clothing items will be donated to our annual rePURPOSE campaign in support of MCC Thrift Shops. (Stay tuned for more info about rePURPOSE this spring!)

Freezer Meals

Freezer Meals
Foodies from our Downtown Hamilton site are selling delicious frozen crockpot meals to raise money for AIDS CARE. Offering 10 different varieties of healthy and convenient weeknight meals, they’ve put together about 200 meals!

Pancakes and Samosas
Two home churches from our High Park site are also cooking up a storm to fundraise for AIDS CARE! The Mimico home church is hosting its annual pancake neighbourhood breakfast, while the Runneymede/Annette home church is selling delicious samosas.

Soup and Splash

Soup and Splash Youth Fundraiser
We love to see our youth getting involved in AIDS CARE! Members of theUNDERGROUND at our Brampton site recently hosted a “Soup and Splash” fundraiser where participants not only enjoyed warming up with some homemade soup, but were also able to bid on a variety of items like eggs and flour to splash on their leaders. The event was a great success, raising $1,000 for theUNDERGROUND contributions towards CARE KITS!

These are just some of the many ways members of our Meeting House community are contributing to AIDS CARE 2016.  As this is the only time of the year we fundraiser for MCC’s work in Southern Africa, we’re proud that AIDS CARE has become an important part of who we are at The Meeting House.

It’s still not too late to get involved! This year’s collection date, across all sites, is February 28. Help us reach our goal of collecting 750 CARE KITS and 2300 CARE CARDS.
