AIDS CARE in Lesotho
In the summer of 2014, I had the privilege of being part of the Africa Learning Team that went to Lesotho and South Africa. We began our time at Paballong. It is situated on the Berea Plateau. I was overwhelmed by the incredible creativity of God everywhere I looked. We were surrounded by mountains and the view in any direction was breathtaking!
Paballong is comprised of an HIV/AIDS clinic, a farm, youth centre and a daycare centre. The Meeting House supports the daycare centre through Mennonite Central Committee’s AIDS CARE campaign. So, while we were primarily there to visit the daycare, we were able to see all of the great work that is being done at Paballong. I spent most of my time playing with the kids at the daycare. The joy and laughter that emanated from them was inspiring. Despite challenging life situations, the 27 boys and 12 girls, aged 2-6 were so full of life. It was beautiful.
Connecting with people despite a language barrier is wonderful! A smile, a hug or a high-five allows barriers to be broken and friendship to begin. Circle time for songs was so special. All of the kids clamored to hold our hands. Having a little hand in your own is precious. There are many sweet faces that I will remember for the rest of my days.
God is at work in Paballong! It was an absolute joy to be able to come alongside the team of directors and encourage them in what they are doing. Time to pray with them and share stories was invaluable. We were given the chance to connect with new friends and I am so thankful that I was part of this team.
We had a teaching series prior to this trip called “Ubuntu”. This is a word from the Buntu people and it means, “People are people through people” or “I am because we are”. We exist because of community. What a beautiful picture. We have community locally but we also have community globally. Meeting a very small part of that global community has left an impact on my life and that is something I will always treasure.
