    We’re Giving Away Over $190,000!

    Local Compassion

What do a ranch outside Brantford, refugee resettlement service in Waterloo, prison ministry in Burlington, pregnancy centre in Toronto, youth programs in Brampton, and homeless services in Ottawa all have in common?

These are all places where you volunteer! Places where you spend countless hours serving, give of your valuable time to build relationships in your community, and make a difference in the lives of others.

Each year since the start of our Transform Mission in...

    Compassion Champion: Valerie Stacey

    Valerie Stacey

Some of you have the privilege of knowing Valerie Stacey. You may serve alongside her in kidmax or attend home church together. Perhaps you traveled on the Africa Learning Team in 2014 with her. One thing is sure: if you don’t know Valerie, I hope you know someone like her. Valerie’s care for those around her is evident in all that she does and we consider ourselves fortunate to have her investing into our children on Sundays.

It has been just over a year since Valerie...

Hespeler Home Church Recognized for Local Compassion

    Hespeler Home Church

Our Hespeler Home Church from has served faithfully at the Cambridge Self-Help Food Bank for the last 3 years. At this year's Annual General Meeting for the food bank, the group was awarded its 2015 Exemplary Service Award.

Liz, the Warehouse Coordinator from the food bank said as she presented the award, "The Hespeler Home Church embodied the spirit of community service and went above and beyond what was required or expected of them—even when it required plumbing, mopping...

    We Will Remember

    Poppy
Occasionally, I’m asked if a peace church like ours that promotes non-violent enemy love should pause to commemorate Remembrance Day or if individual Christ-followers should wear poppies and participate in Remembrance Day events.

Pacifists, like anyone, have differing opinions – there is no one right answer. But my approach, and our approach at The Meeting House, has always been to use Remembrance Day as an opportunity to...

Refugee sponsorship through a child's eyes

    Thank You Canada

The last time we sponsored a refugee family, I was about 12 years old. Our Chinese Baptist church in North York had sponsored four refugee families from Vietnam in the early 1980s. This church community was largely made up of newcomers helping newcomers. At that time, we were new immigrants from Hong Kong ourselves, having just arrived in Canada five or six years earlier.

I remember the sponsorship experience rather vividly: from the time the plight of the Vietnamese "boat...

    Purposeful Proximity

    Purposeful Proximity

I want to start us off here with a question — reflecting on your spiritual journey, what has been most impactful in helping you become more like Jesus?  Has it been the teachings you’re following?  Reading the Bible?  Praying?  Studying?  I think we can all agree these are integral aspects of our discipleship process but … are they the most important?

When I look back at the things that have shaped me in my walk with Jesus,...

    Ordinary Peace

    Belfast Peace Wall

This past July I crossed the Atlantic Ocean for a close up look at the work of peace and reconciliation in Northern Ireland.  As a follower of Jesus, pursuing peace is an important part of my faith and I wanted a chance to promote peace in a practical way. Going to Northern Ireland, I harboured a secret hope for dramatic confrontations, persuasive arguments, and eloquent debates; work replete with glamour, risk, tension, and dare I say, even danger.

    Instead, much to my surprise,...

Downtown Hamilton. What do those words mean to you?

    Downtown Hamilton

When I moved here 6 years ago, Hamilton was explained in two ways: Mountain and Downtown.

Both were very clear & both very different. At times, when downtown Hamilton was mentioned, it was with a shudder; an inherent fear because, after all, it’s downtown, its messy, it’s urban-busy-industrial-cramped-congested-risky- too many people, and for some it’s just too much to think about.

Then, years ago at our sites in West Hamilton & East Hamilton,...

International Day of Peace: A Reflection

    Peace

Today is the International Day of Peace. I’m so thankful that today is dedicated to celebrating this universal value. We would all benefit from seeing more of it in our lives.

I can’t help but think about how I am promoting peace in my everyday life. Is my desire to live peacefully evident in my life or do my waking hours contribute to conflict and struggle?  What do I spend my time dwelling on?  Do I focus on how I’ve been done wrong by or how we can all use...
